Manfrotto 055MFV + 701RC2 Head
If you are thinking of using a scope for wildlife watching then you will need a tripod
It's easy to believe that just any old cluster of 3 sticks will do, but get the wrong one, and massive shake will undo any detail provided by the high magnifications of the scope.
Manfrotto produce quality kit, and their range is so comprehensive that it can be tricky to pin down just what you might need for reliable scoping. The 701RC2 head mounted on 055MFV legs offers the perfect combination of stability and portability. I have found the head to be very reliable and smooth in a wide variety of temperatures, and the carbon fibre legs are immensely strong and rigid despite weighing only 600g. There are neat details, like the foam on the tops of two of the legs, making the whole thing comfy to carry on your shoulder complete with 'scope, and the quick release plate which clips easily on and off the head (you can get extra plates for other gear).
I also find the carbon fibre much more comfortable to hold on a cold day than metal legs. This rig also doubles as a very competent set up for a small video camera, and for stills too. Almost everything in the Manfrotto range is modular, so, if you fancy a different head in the future, you can still use the same carbon legs.
Great set of sticks!
